About

Association for World Education (AWE) is an international NGO with consultative status at the United Nations. With individual members, institutional members and chapters from more than 20 chapters across the world, AWE is a global platform for anyone that works with innovative methods for sustainable education, lifelong learning and global citizenship.

AWE began in the United States as the Association of World Colleges and Universities – but the idea that the Association should develop into a network for “World Colleges and Universities” was soon abolished and, in 1974, the name was changed to the Association for World Education (AWE).

Soon thereafter, individual members became the core of the association and that instantly provided an international network of individuals, but at the same time weakened the connection to the existing colleges, institutions and universities. Since then, AWE has worked consistently to include organizational partners and stakeholders into the global network and as a result, AWE has a comprehensive network of members who are individual and organizational partners from across the globe.

In 1976, AWE was present in the United Nations as a non-governmental organization for the first time and in 1978 the AWE obtained consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and UNESCO and has since participated in the work of the UN as an International NGO. This participation has always had a high priority.

Thank you for your interest in the Association for World education.

Statement from AWE on the Palestine - Israel conflict

We, the Association for World Education (AWE), an international NGO of educators having consultative status with the UN, deplore the violence that we are witnessingright now. We are both horrified and overwhelmed with feelings of helplessness while innocent civilians continue to be targeted and killed. It is unacceptable. Violence against civilians can never be justified, no matter if perpetrated by Hamas or the Israeli army.

All souls matter. The world cannot bear to witness the loss of innocent lives through such brutality any longer. It is necessary to take all steps to protect human rights, first and foremost, the right to live! All efforts must be made to prevent further harm from what is happening now, with hundreds of thousands of Palestinian people in the crosshairs of attack. Their basic survival needs must be the bottom line. The time for action is now. We strongly urge the UN Security Council to declare an immediate cease-fire in the threatened area.

Note from the Co-chairs:

We have been associated with AWE for more than 15 years. As a network organisation of educators from all over the world, we had lot of opportunities to learn from each other about the innovative education and sustainable development practices going on in different parts of the world.

We are honored to be elected as the Co-chairs of the AWE for 2023- 2025 in its International Council Meeting held at Cairo during November 2022.

The overall goal of AWE is to promote world education and sustainable practices with the aim of creating awareness of universal identity and development of active citizenship.

If you are interested in world education and linkage with adult educators from all over the world for international discourse, AWE is definitely a global platform for you. You are welcome to join us.
